At Berry, our mission of “Always advancing to protect what’s important” drives our commitment to building a more sustainable future. As a company, we are taking advantage of the benefits of plastics to lightweight products and decrease greenhouse gas emissions, while also emphasizing recyclability and the use of recycled content. Our sustainability strategy reflects the importance with which we view this aspect of our business.

Our primary material and one of our largest opportunity factors is the material we use to manufacture our products. We are constantly evaluating the best material to perform at the highest level while minimizing the environmental impact. We not only consider our direct waste, but we also consider the entire life cycle of our products. As we strive to leave the model of a linear economy to a circular economy, waste management and our ability to reuse material and resources will be critical.

As a stage of this transformation, we have developed a new line of PCR closures. We are utilizing curbside material, which is the most widely available on the market today, to produce this new line of closures. By using this material, we are helping to close the loop during the transition into a circular economy. Our new extended line of stock PCR closures allows you to partner with one supplier to further deliver on your sustainability goals. We have the most comprehensive portfolio of sizes and styles of stock PCR closures in the industry today.
As a start to this process, we identified sizes/styles based on a variety of design attributes and qualities. The optimal percentage of PCR was chosen based on dimensional and physical performance. Tests were conducted to review the effect of processing on the fit, form, and function of each item. While evaluating all of these characteristics, we also compared to the virgin resin, with 0% PCR (current), samples.

We plan to launch products with over thirty sizes and styles to build our current portfolio, and we will continue to expand on these as we can. We have various non-food closures approved in overcaps, continuous thread, dispensing or flip-top, tamper-evident and cups. We have also added jars to our portfolio of PCR products. The target markets for our current PCR closures are personal and beauty care, homecare and other non-food products.

This data is reflective of our PCR usage as reported in the reporting year. Historical data is not adjusted for acquisitions, but instead, is reflective of our business as it existed during the year indicated. FY19 includes full year reporting from RPC.

In our recently released Impact Report and GRI Index, we have made a positive impact in the communities in which we operate as well as through our sustainability strategy, Impact 2025. This includes setting a new record for use of recycled content as well as exceeding our targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, landfill waste, energy, and water intensity.

Innovative Closures

Custom solutions are also available with our closures. We have multiple teams that can help alter a current stock closure or create a new closure to meet your needs. Post-Industrial Resin (PIR) and Post-Consumer Resin (PCR) Content

A package is classified as being made of recycled material if it utilizes material that is post-industrial and/or material that is post-consumer. There is a distinct difference between these two materials, and both add value to sustainable packaging.

According to, post-industrial recycled (PIR) content, or pre-consumer recycle, is "the waste generated from the manufacturing process that is reclaimed or used again in the same material." This material is ideal for applications that are not suitable for post-consumer recycled content.

Post-consumer recycled (PCR) content is everything used by the consumer for its intended purpose that has reached its end of use and "we toss into the recycling bin, such as empty plastic bottles." Post-consumer recycled content is material that is curbside-collected household single-stream recyclables, as well as recyclables that are collected through deposit collection locations. These can also include post-commercial sources, which can be a cleaner more consistent option.
