Partnerships to End Plastic Waste

Though our impact is large, we know we cannot achieve our goals alone. We invest in partnerships to extend our reach and capitalize on our joint initiatives. From agreements for circular resins and enhanced recycling infrastructure, to joining with industry allies for change, our investments which are far-reaching through the value chain.

Our partners representing the environmental sustainability area are critical to our success in ending plastic waste, promoting a circular economy, and advocating for the power of plastics. Each partner performs a specific role relative to our sustainability goals. Although every partner is important, we believe our impact is greatest with the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and The Recycling Partnership.

Alliance to End Plastic Waste

In January 2019, we joined the Alliance to End Plastic Waste as a founding member. The Alliance is a new organization, now comprised of 42 companies and has made an initial multi-billion-dollar commitment to invest in solutions to eliminate plastic waste in the environment. The focus of the Alliance is narrowed to four main areas: infrastructure development, innovation, education and engagement, and clean-up.

New Plastics Economy Global Commitment

Announced in June 2019, we are a proud signatory of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment to eliminate plastic pollution at its source. By signing the Global Commitment, we have pledged to:

  • Take action to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging
  • 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable
  • A target of 10% post-consumer recycled content across all plastic packaging used
  • Take action to increase reusable packaging

Operation Clean Sweep

Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) is an international program designed to prevent and help keep plastic litter materials out of the marine environment.

As an active member since 2012, we have pledged to prevent resin pellet, flake, and powder loss. The organization is a critical component to our Impact 2025 strategy, and is an important guide in many of our manufacturing facilities.

Spotlight: Customer Collaboration is Key to Bringing Circular Solutions to Market Faster

Berry Global partnered with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. to improve the recyclability of food packaging with MXD6, a high-performance barrier solution for extruded articles, such as thermoformed items and extruded plastic tubes and bottles. The MXD6 barrier is recyclable up to 12% and received Critical Guidance recognition from the Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR), validating its compatibility with the Polypropylene (PP) recycling stream. Using MXD6 helps eliminate the performance and compatibility limitations of Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH), including limited recyclability and reprocessing issues that cause degradation and contamination, and offers an alternative during material shortages. 

Berry Hosts Its Annual Earth Day Event and Supports Efforts to End Plastic Waste

In honor of Earth Day, we are hosting our annual community event at Berry Global’s headquarters in Evansville, IN. We have been celebrating Earth Day with this event for more than 30 years, giving students tours of our company’s largest manufacturing facility to offer an up-close look at how we are giving plastics multiple lives. Tours for more than 800 elementary students from across the local community include educational presentations and activities from Berry team members and our community partners, helping students understand the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling in their daily lives.

Berry Global Again Recognized by CDP for Climate Leadership and Supplier Engagement

Global packaging leader Berry Global Group, Inc. has again earned prestigious Climate Change and Supplier Engagement “A-” ratings from global sustainability disclosure non-profit, CDP. The company's prioritization of climate action and supply chain transparency – above both global and North American regional averages – places it among the top 18% and 15%, respectively, of plastic product manufacturers to reach the “Leadership” band. Calculated based on environmental disclosure and performance, CDP ratings underscore Berry’s commitment to working with its suppliers to achieve net-zero emissions across its global operations and value chain by 2050.
